Whether you are a journalist investigating high-control groups, a student writing a thesis, a family member trying to understand a loved one’s sudden transformation, or someone quietly questioning your own involvement/navigating information about Falun Gong can feel bewildering.

On one side, public relations campaigns present Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa) as a harmless, traditional meditation practice persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). On the other side lies a complex, multi-billion-dollar global organisation governed by apocalyptic theology, strict dogma, intense psychological control, and high-stakes political agendas.

This primer provides an objective, evidence-based, and deeply personal overview of what Falun Gong is, how it operates, and why leaving or understanding it can be so challenging.

1. What is Falun Gong? (Origins, Scale, and Structure)

Founded in China in 1992 by Li Hongzhi (referred to by practitioners as Master or Shifu), Falun Gong began during China’s “qigong boom”. While it initially presented itself as a mind-body practice centered on the principles of Zhen-Shan-Ren (Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance), its core theology rapidly evolved into a high-control religious movement.

Assessing Group Demographics & Scale

Determining the exact number of Falun Gong practitioners worldwide is challenging due to the absence of formal membership, initiation rituals, or public registries. Practitioners identify themselves through varying levels of personal commitment.

Organisationally, Falun Gong operates on a dual structure. On the surface, it appears highly decentralised, run locally by volunteer “assistants” or “contact persons” who hold no formal administrative title over others. Beneath this, however, Li Hongzhi’s spiritual and operational authority is absolute. Dissent is treated as moral failure or demonic interference.

2. Core Beliefs, Alien Cosmology, and Intolerance

While public materials emphasise meditation and gentle ethics, internal teachings (Zhuan Falun and Li’s ongoing lectures) contain dogmatic and exclusionary worldviews.

Deification of the Leader & Supernatural Claims

Li Hongzhi portrays himself as the highest god in the universe, demanding absolute obedience. He claims to possess supernatural abilities, such as levitation, telepathy, and invisibility – misleading vulnerable individuals seeking spiritual guidance.

Alien Influence and Modern Technology

Li Hongzhi teaches that extraterrestrial beings are actively manipulating human civilisation:

• Control Through Science: Technologies like computers and the internet are framed as alien plots designed to sever humanity’s connection to the divine.
• Possession & Moral Decay: Aliens are believed to possess humans, leading to spiritual and cultural degradation.
• Spiritual Resistance: Practicing Falun Gong is presented as a primary defense against alien takeover and a means to save humanity.

Bigotry and Social Exclusivism

• Homophobia: Homosexuality is explicitly taught as a moral deviation and unnatural behavior. Li claims practice can eliminate homosexual desires.
• Racial Isolationism: Li teaches that different races possess distinct spiritual origins and heavenly realms. Interracial marriage is condemned as spiritually harmful, with Chinese individuals framed as spiritually superior.
• Apocalyptic Fear: Constant warnings of impending cosmic doom induce severe anxiety, deepening followers’ dependence on the group for protection.

3. High-Control Trait Matrix

Like many high-control groups (or cults), Falun Gong relies on specific psychological mechanisms to isolate and manage its members:

• Rejection of Modern Medicine: Disease is defined as the physical manifestation of “karma” accrued from bad deeds in past lives. Li teaches that true practitioners do not need conventional medicine and that seeking treatment indicates a lack of faith. This has caused widespread, preventable harm; my own father died a painful death after refusing medical assistance due to these beliefs.
• Obsessive Rituals & Mental Strain: Members are expected to read Li’s books daily, perform hours of exercise, and engage in “Sending Righteous Thoughts” (a form of focused prayer/meditation) every six hours, even waking up in the middle of the night. This routine disrupts sleep, causes mental exhaustion, and leads many to neglect career, family, and personal responsibilities.
• Isolation and “De-Sentimentalisation”: Human affection and familial ties (qing) are framed as attachments to be discarded. Critical loved ones are frequently demonised, encouraging social isolation.
• Financial Exploitation: Members are consistently pressured to donate significant time, labour, and money to sustain the group’s global infrastructure.

4. The Propaganda & Media Ecosystem

While presented to the public as an independent conservative newspaper, The Epoch Times was created and directly managed by Falun Gong practitioners (I was personally involved in launching the UK edition in 2000). Internal lectures such as Li’s “Fa Teaching Given at the Epoch Times Meeting” (October 17, 2009) confirm his direct oversight of the outlet.

• Political Alignment: The outlet spent millions on political campaigns and Facebook ads supporting Donald Trump, whom Li Hongzhi told followers was sent by heaven to destroy the CCP.
• Disinformation & Bans: The paper became a major distributor of conspiracy theories, including QAnon narratives and anti-vaccine misinformation, ultimately resulting in permanent ad bans on major social media platforms.

Shen Yun Performing Arts: Youth Exploitation & Labour Issues

Promoted heavily as a revival of traditional Chinese culture, Shen Yun serves as both a primary revenue driver and a recruitment funnel.

• Forced Child Labor: Performers are often recruited as children (some as young as 12 or 13), frequently targeting vulnerable immigrant families devoted to the movement.
• Coercion & Abuse: Performers are kept in closed compounds (such as Dragon Springs in New York), subjected to intense schedules, paid little to no wages, denied adequate formal education or medical care, and prevented from leaving freely.

For Family Members

• Avoid Theological Arguments: Debating teachings or attacking Li Hongzhi directly will likely cause your loved one to withdraw, as they are taught to view skepticism as demonic interference.
• Maintain Emotional Anchor Points: Focus on shared, non-religious memories and show unconditional care.
• Set Clear Boundaries: Establish firm limits regarding financial requests, coercive proselytizing, or medical neglect involving children or dependents.

For Leavers

Walking away from Falun Gong requires dismantling a world where failure to comply means eternal destruction.
